Local Transit metro · ferry · taxi · tram

metro

11 lines covering both European and Asian sides, plus the Marmaray underwater rail crossing the Bosphorus. Runs 6am-midnight.

Crew tip: Metro filming requires Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality permit (3+ weeks). Marmaray crossing makes a striking single-take establishing shot.

ferry

Bosphorus ferries connect European and Asian sides every 15-30 min. Vapur (commuter) and Şehir Hatları operate dedicated routes.

Crew tip: Private ferry charter possible for filming — far better than public boats for controlled shots and equipment.

taxi

Yellow taxis abundant. Uber operates as 'UberTaxi' — calls licensed yellow cabs only. BiTaksi is the leading local app.

Crew tip: Always insist on meter ('taksimetre'). Have destination written in Turkish.

tram

T1 tramline runs from Kabataş through Sultanahmet to Bağcılar — covers most major historic filming locations.

Crew tip: Useful for crew movement between Sultanahmet and Galata/Karaköy.

Production Parking difficult · Permits required

Street parking nearly impossible in central districts. İSPARK manages public garages — book ahead for production vehicles.

Production vehicle permits via Istanbul Film Commission. Base camps typically arranged in industrial zones outside the historic peninsula.

Getting Between Locations

Traffic in Istanbul is notoriously heavy — allow 60-90 min for cross-Bosphorus moves during rush hour (8-10am, 5-8pm). Ferries are often faster than driving. Sultanahmet to Beyoğlu is 15 min by tram or a scenic 25-min walk across Galata Bridge.
