landmark
The Byzantine cathedral-turned-mosque dominating the old city. Exterior shoots from the square or Blue Mosque side capture both monuments in a single frame.
4,000 shops across 60 covered streets — the Bond, Argo, and Taken 2 chase-sequence backdrop. Vaulted ceilings, lantern light, and dense color.
The strait separating Europe and Asia. Ferry decks, yalı mansions, and the suspension bridge at sunset offer Istanbul's signature establishing shots.
Medieval Genoese tower with 360° rooftop views. Surrounding cobbled streets in Galata offer European-style backdrops.
Ottoman sultans' residence for 400 years. Courtyards, harem chambers, and panoramic terrace overlooking the Golden Horn and Bosphorus.
6th-century underground reservoir with 336 marble columns. Used in Inferno and From Russia With Love. Atmospheric, otherworldly lighting.
Pedestrianized 19th-century boulevard with the historic red tram, packed crowds, and European façades. Covers 1.4km from Taksim Square to Tünel.
Steep cobbled lanes lined with pastel Ottoman houses and historic churches. Period-piece favorite with minimal modern intrusion.
UNESCO-listed historic peninsula with Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Hippodrome. The cinematic heart of Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul.
Bohemian neighborhood with Galata Tower, İstiklal Avenue's tram and crowds, hidden passageways, and 19th-century European façades.
Yalı mansions, ferry terminals, and the bridges connecting two continents. Iconic establishing shots day or night.
Local markets, mosque courtyards, and quieter streets — perfect for everyday Istanbul scenes away from the tourist crush.
Glass towers, financial district, and contemporary architecture for corporate, automotive, and futuristic productions.
Scene 03 — The Case for Istanbul

Scene 04 — Logistics
Istanbul Airport (IST) — 45km / 50-90 min
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) — 40km / 60-90 min (Asian side)
metro
11 lines covering both European and Asian sides, plus the Marmaray underwater rail crossing the Bosphorus. Runs 6am-midnight.
Crew tip: Metro filming requires Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality permit (3+ weeks). Marmaray crossing makes a striking single-take establishing shot.
ferry
Bosphorus ferries connect European and Asian sides every 15-30 min. Vapur (commuter) and Şehir Hatları operate dedicated routes.
Crew tip: Private ferry charter possible for filming — far better than public boats for controlled shots and equipment.
taxi
Yellow taxis abundant. Uber operates as 'UberTaxi' — calls licensed yellow cabs only. BiTaksi is the leading local app.
Crew tip: Always insist on meter ('taksimetre'). Have destination written in Turkish.
tram
T1 tramline runs from Kabataş through Sultanahmet to Bağcılar — covers most major historic filming locations.
Crew tip: Useful for crew movement between Sultanahmet and Galata/Karaköy.
Street parking nearly impossible in central districts. İSPARK manages public garages — book ahead for production vehicles.
Production vehicle permits via Istanbul Film Commission. Base camps typically arranged in industrial zones outside the historic peninsula.
Traffic in Istanbul is notoriously heavy — allow 60-90 min for cross-Bosphorus moves during rush hour (8-10am, 5-8pm). Ferries are often faster than driving. Sultanahmet to Beyoğlu is 15 min by tram or a scenic 25-min walk across Galata Bridge.
